The word scoliosis comes from the Greek word "Skolios", meaning twisted. Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine with pathological forward, sideways, and rotational movement of the involved vertebrae. Scoliosis can be divided into two major groups. The first group is called congenital scoliosis and it is present at birth. The second and most common group is called idiopathic scoliosis. This one is developed throughout lifetime and its cause is mostly unknown.
Regardless of the degree of scoliosis or its cause, scoliosis is always accompanied by muscle imbalance and soft tissue tightness. If these two issues are not addressed correctly, they can lead to progression of the curves with eventual development of pain and deformity. If treated early and appropriately, the progression of the spinal pathological curvature can be prevented or stopped all together. In many cases, the curvature can be corrected.
Since the number and the convexity of the pathological curve of scoliosis vary among patients, we design programs that are highly individualized and address our client's particular type of scoliosis.
Our Complete Scoliosis Program® is designed to reduce the pathological curvatures in the spine, increase vital lung capacity, correct muscle imbalance and increase strength.
The Complete Scoliosis Program® incorporates principals of manual therapy (passive treatment techniques for joints and associate structures), Schroth scoliosis technique (a non-invasive, three-dimensional scoliosis treatment technique), and Pilates. We have developed exercises that are performed on some of today’s cutting edge exercise equipments such as GYROTONIC, Pilates reformer, spine corrector, wall-bars etc. We also use more common tools that are more accessible but will allow performing the same excellent corrections. Some of these tools are: poles, yoga belts, low stools, and Thera-Bands.
As stated before, we treat each type of scoliosis according to its type and number of the curvature. For example a compensated three curve scoliosis must be treated and approached differently than a non-compensated C curve scoliosis.
After we thoroughly assess and determine the type of scoliosis, we tailor a scoliosis treatment program that will address that particular type.
We emphasize educating our clients/patients about their scoliosis, because proper understanding is crucial to correct performance of home exercises and long lasting results.
Just after a few scoliosis treatment sessions, clients/patients become more aware of the curvature in their spine, the position of their ribs, shoulders and hips, their spinal alignment, and muscle imbalance (tightness and weakness). This enables them to consciously correct their posture not just during our sessions but also throughout the day.
During our scoliosis treatment program, our clients gradually improve muscle strength, reduce the pathological curvatures in the spine, enhance lung vital capacity, improve flexibility of spine and elasticity of muscles, diminish pain and maximize functionality.
The key to your success is your commitment and consistency with your home exercise program.
